This is a portrait of Winston Churchill by Yousuf Karsh. The lighting is well done as it highlights the subject’s face while keeping his body in shadow. This creates good contrast between the lights and darks which makes the image visually appealing.
Salvador Dali was a surrealist painter and so it is fitting that this portrait by Philippe Halsman has a surrealist feel to it. This is accomplished through the placement of the subject leaning into the frame. The odd placement of the subject is accented by the absurd mustache and animated expression on Dali’s face. The white background keeps the focus on the subject and gives the picture asymmetrical balance.
This is a very famous portrait by Steve McCurry called Afghan Girl. The colours used in the picture contrast each other very well and make the subject stand out. The most striking part of this image is the girl’s eyes which were brilliantly captured using good lighting.
